overview and definition
An F-1 student currently studying at the University of Utah who has a spouse or unmarried children (under 21 years of age) can request to bring them to the United States on an F-2 dependent visa. The dependent is added to the primary F-1 student’s SEVIS record and will receive their own I-20 and SEVIS number.
An F-2 dependent's immigration status is dependent on the F-1 immigration status. If the F-1 status expires, terminates, or the F-1 leaves the U.S. permanently, the F-2's status also ends.
Policies
Studying on an F-2 Visa
F-2 spouses and adult children may study less than full-time. F-2 children may study full-time at U.S. public schools (kindergarten through 12th grade).
Removing a Dependent
F-1 students must notify ISSS when their F-2 dependents end their visa sponsorship due to: permanently leaving the U.S. or by changing their visa status. More information can be found under "Removing a Dependent."
Processing Time
Upon receiving a COMPLETED application from the student, ISSS will process the application within 10 business days or sooner.
Expedited Requests
ISSS is not able to expedite any request as we strive to provide fair and equitable service to all students. It is the student's responsibility to ensure they submit their request in a timely manner.
Calling and emailing ISSS to request that we process student's requests as soon as possible will only slow down the process.
Adding Multiple Dependents
Students must submit one e-form per dependent.

an email from ISSS.A Designated School Official (DSO) from ISSS will review the completed

Receiving the Initial I-20
Once the application is approved, the DSO will send the I-20 electronically through
UAtlas. Students will receive a second email with instructions on how to retrieve
the I-20. Students are advised to immediately print and sign the I-20.
Once the student receives the Dependent's I-20, the F-1 student will sign the document
at the bottom of the first page. Your dependent should not sign their I-20 - only
the F-1 primary signs this document.
After Receiving the F-2 Dependent
I-20
Once the student has received their F-2 Dependent's I-20, they will now need to obtain an F-2 visa or change the visa status if the dependent is already in the U.S. on another visa status.
Outside the U.S.
If your dependent is traveling to Utah from outside the U.S., your dependent will need to apply for an F-2 visa at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in their country of citizenship. Your dependent will need to bring their new F-2 dependent I-20 to their visa interview.
For more information about this process and the additional documents your dependent will need to present at their visa interview, please refer to visa application information on the U.S. Embassy or Consulate's website or contact them directly.
Inside the U.S. & On a Different Visa
It is recommended students meet with an immigration attorney to help them through the application process with USCIS.
Dependents and Travel
F-2 dependents may depart and re-enter the U.S. independently of the F-1 student as long as the F-1 student is in active status.
F-2 dependents must carry the following documents when entering the U.S.:
